2020 LGFCU IMPACT REPORT

A Note from the Dean

Ninety years ago, the School of Government—then known as the Institute of Government—made a commitment to North Carolina communities. By engaging in practical scholarship and working alongside public officials, we would foster an enduring partnership that would improve the lives of North Carolinians. That charge has remained the foundation of the School’s principles since its founding in 1931.

The past year has tested everyone’s collective resolve. We have learned many lessons as individuals, as communities, and as a nation. We also recognize that this learning is an ongoing journey.

In times like these, we feel the urgency of our mission. Local governments and public officials depend on the School for timely, accurate, and unbiased support, and that is especially true when they face severe challenges. We can offer that support more effectively when we work alongside a committed and purposeful partner like Local Government Federal Credit Union.

As you read through the stories and profiles in this year’s impact report, you will undoubtedly see the recurring theme of “investment.” It is no coincidence that so many of the officials who benefit from programs supported by LGFCU use this language.  They recognize that an investment has been made in them and they are inspired to invest themselves in their communities.  LGFCU’s longstanding partnership with the School has created a ripple effect of positive change for local governments, public officials, and North Carolina communities.

When we identify and invest in the potential of our communities and local leaders, we create benefits for all North Carolinians. That’s a powerful partnership with a major impact.

I hope you enjoy exploring just a handful of these stories in this report. Thank you for all you do for the School and for North Carolina.

Sincerely,

Mike Smith
Dean, UNC School of Government

A Note from the President

Moving through this partnership journey with the UNC School of Government has been rewarding and enlightening—rewarding to have a partner that shares our commitment and determination to improve the lives all North Carolinians, and enlightening as we assess and develop collective plans to meet the needs of our state’s residents and communities.

Our partnership has taken many forms, including our continued support of the Development Finance Initiative (DFI), partnering with cities and towns to revitalize and showcase the heart of communities such as Durham and Wilmington, and one of the newest projects—the historically Black community of West Southern Pines.

Together, LGFCU and the School also support North Carolina’s best and brightest local government leaders with professional development opportunities. Providing ongoing support of the Fellows program, “Leading for Results,” and increasing our funding for professional development scholarships is a win-win for all North Carolinians, who benefit from the enhanced knowledge and skills of leaders who are eager to guide our communities to ongoing success.

2020 was certainly a challenging year, but with a dedicated partner like the UNC School of Government, the work was not insurmountable. The challenges fueled us to think outside the box, to continue to deliver programming and results that helped our state stay on track.

We remain engaged with the LGFCU Fellows alumni and, together with the School, look forward to our continued commitment and efforts to keep North Carolina successful.

Sincerely,

Mark R. Caverly
President, Local Government Federal Credit Union
